The Good Old Hockey Game and the Unhappy Child

25 February 2019

Mercifully, the hockey season is winding down. Hockey isn't what you think it is. Please read the truth of the matter over at the Bravest Thing.

#9 - Breakaway

12 February 2018

Joseph played another hockey game this past weekend. The lesson:

If at first you don't succeed...

(nice head shot)

Try try again.

Points to Ponder: Pictures and Such

29 October 2017

Points to Ponder on a cold a windy Sunday afternoon.

1) Choc it up to...

Mommy thought it would be fun to give the kids chocolate zucchini muffins with Nutella and strawberries for breakfast, because "it's Sunday."

The little angels. What could go wrong?

Ten minutes later...

Around and around and around they went.
Can we just stick to oatmeal tomorrow?

 2) Hockey

The hockey season began a few weeks ago. I am in my first year as a coach. I was talked into being a head coach, and now I also somehow ended up being the one who plans all the practices for both teams. Yesterday we had a hockey jamboree. It was way too long (3 plus hours) but Joseph loved it! It was neat seeing him as a second year player. All the best players from last year have moved on to senior novice. This leaves Joseph and a couple of others as the far and away best players out there. That's the thing with hockey. Every second year is your year to shine.

Here's Joseph going in for a breakaway.

Here he is returning after scoring.

Scoring was a little too easy for him against some of the younger kids. We'll be playing some harder teams later in the year.

3) Snow, snow, snow, snoooow

Yes we had winter arrive earlier last week. It's since somewhat melted, though today is quite cool with it blowing snow. I can never get tired of the reaction of little kids when they see snow for the first time in the fall. They are so pumped. It was like Christmas over at the school, and same with our backyard.

4, 5, and 6) Riders: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Things are never boring in Riderville. There has been lots going on lately. We have a great team this year.

The Good:

A week ago our top receiver, Duron Carter, became a defensive back. The opposing team's quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell, mocked in on twitter, saying he'd throw 25 balls his way. Well, Carter got the last laugh. He picked Mitchell off and ran it back for a touchdown. I just love the call by our radio guy Rod Pedersen!

The Bad:

Well, bad and good. On Friday old Mosaic Stadium was torn down. I had the live video link playing at school for my students to keep an eye on. And then...

The new stadium is simply awesome. I love it. Still though, so many memories were with the old one. I thought Rod Pedersen (already mentioned) had some great thoughts on the demolition. From his blog:
"It's fitting the Riders won Friday night on the same day the Grand Ol' Lady came down. No stadium in Canada has hosted more pro football games than Taylor Field but now she's just a memory. I was there Friday to pay my respects but thought the image of the grandstand toppling over was undignified. (Like an old man falling over on his face). I know it had to be done, but wish I hadn't looked."
The Ugly:

Yes, the Riders won handily on Friday night, beating Montreal in what was the return of Darian Durant. This is how we closed out the first half though. A collective groan was heard around the province. Sigh. Watch at 3:50 of the video.

Again... Sigh.

7) Books

We've really cut down on our TV watching. So I figured I could splurge on some books. A few arrived recently (more on the way).

I started The Man in the Iron Mask. So far (300 pages in) it's excellent. I'm really looking forward to reading Anthony Esolen's book. I enjoy his work at crisis magazine. I'm sure many of you have read his incredible take down of Jesuit heretic (repetitive) Fr. James Martin. As for Chip Gaines' book, hey, he's a very entertaining guy.

That's all I have for now. We still have to brave the elements here and get outside. Yucky. Have a great week.

Like father, like son

11 January 2017

Like father, like son. Two of the finest to ever lace 'em up! Here we are in our rookie years.

Joseph On Ice

13 October 2016

For years Joseph has envisioned jumping onto the ice like the Montreal Canadiens do. Crowd cheering. Coldplay's Fix You playing. A magnificent moment! Well, Joseph had his first hockey practice ever. That magnificent moment arrived. And I captured it on a little ipod camera. Enjoy!

Chequetember

11 September 2016

The month of Chequetember has finally hit the Millette house. Our first experience of extra-curricular activities, and the money required to fund them. This is only our first child...

Oh well, he sure is proud of his new equipment!

Sauce is Hot

3 July 2016

Who doesn't love sauce? It's the hottest thing right now. I speak, of course, of the original hockey sauce kit. Saucer shots into a little net. Don't know what that is? Watch:

The only trouble is that sauce can cost upwards of $200. So I rummaged around for materials to build my own. Some broken sticks. A few chunks of left over underlay plywood. Some netting found at school. A little paint and bolts kicking around. Even the chunk of my tub surround that I had to cut out around the window. Behold sauce:

Hours of fun:

Becca attempted. In fairness to her she was using a right handed stick. And she just had a baby. And there was a hurricane, earthquake, and tornado.

  Joseph gets into the act.

But the best for last. John Paul was just loving it!

Sauce sure is hot. Better grab a beer to cool down.

Points to Ponder: Mr. Hockey Edition

11 June 2016

1) Mr. Hockey

Everyone is complaining about how so many celebrities, musicians, actors, and athletes have died this year. Just last week it was Muhammed Ali. But yesterday's news, for me, is a real elbow to the gut. Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, has passed away at the age of 88. He took Saskatchewan Tough to a whole new level. When his mom gave birth to him out on the farm without anyone around to help, you knew he'd be something. People often say he was the greatest hockey player of all time. I say Bobby Orr is. However, if I had to build a team I kid you not I would take Gordie Howe over Wayne Gretzky. He was that good.

I only saw him once. It was at an Ottawa Senators game. They had Howe come in for a pre-game ceremony. Needless to say, the crowd went nuts and gave him a long ovation. Later, as we were wandering the concourse at the arena, I looked ahead and saw a white-haired man walking out of one of the private boxes. He was with a couple of other people. I just couldn't believe it, Mr. Hockey was right there! They went straight to a waiting elevator, so I didn't get a chance to do my: "Do you know who you are?!!!! You're Gordie Howe!!!"

May he rest in peace.

2) Prepare the Way

As part of our preparation for the baby, we've been trying to transition John Paul to sleep either by himself, with me, with Joseph, with his bear, heck with anyone but Mommy. Last night I pulled a mattress into Joseph's room. Joseph took the mattress. I lay down with John Paul in the big bed. After nearly an hour of trying to get him to sleep I left, frustrated. Thankfully Joseph took over. I guess when I left John Paul crawled onto the tiny mattress with Joseph. Joseph told me this morning: "I had a bit of a long and short time of putting John Paul asleep. About five minutes. Yeah, about five minutes I put him to sleep. He was kicking me so I slapped his hand. I slapped his hand three times for you and I yelled at him to go to sleep. I put him to sleep for you." Thanks Joseph. The three of us still played musical beds though. Sometimes there were two on the little mattress and one on the big bed. Sometimes all three of us were on the big bed. Sometimes we took turns alone on the little mattress. Needless to say, John Paul is putting up a fight on his way to being replaced as the baby.

Here he is, presumably hiding his face in shame.

3) Hot Hot Heat

It was a very hot week. I'm so thankful I live in Saskatchewan where the heat is not too frequent. I'm also thankful for air conditioning, freezies, and did I mention air conditioning? We hauled out the pool this week. Here are some action shots.

The boys drying off together. I quickly snapped a picture before they started fighting.

John Paul watering the garden. No, really. He is watering the garden. He has a water gun in his hand. Why? What did you think I meant?

Joseph tasting water from the pool.

The boys getting some sun.

John Paul filling up his water gun. Check out those pipes!

4) Tattoo Time

Seeing as summer is pretty well here, tattoos are, er, more noticeable now. When they come up in conversation I always say the same thing: I wouldn't put a bumper sticker on a Ferrari. Then there's one teacher at school here. He has a tattoo on his arm. Chinese letters of some sort. Why? He said he's half Chinese and so wants to showcase his Chinese heritage. I'm like: "but you look Chinese already..." Sort of like putting a bumper sticker that says "Ferrari" on a Ferrari... Everyone knows what it is already.

5) Life is too short...

Music is so amazing these days. The other day I heard a new song by super-punk band Blink 182. The catch lyrics were: "Life is too short to last long."

Do they even try to make sense anymore?

Let me ponder that statement a little longer and see if it does, indeed, make sense. Life is too short to last long. If life was not too short, it would last long. Or, if it did last long then it would not be too short. In the same way that if a tall person were not short then he would be short on shortness, or tall on tallness. Or that water is too wet to be dry. But dryness is short on wetness like a tall person is dry when he is not wet because life is short and water evaporates too quickly to last long and so tall people are dry. Got it?

Life is too short to try and make sense of this.

6) Speaking of Short...

Did I mention only 14 work days left until summer? Well, we are allowed to leave half a day early, so 13.5 days. Plus no one really does much work those last two administrative days: 12 days. But if baby comes soon I will take at least a few days off: 9 days. And two days are filled with field trips and what not: 7 days. And a week is for goofing off: 2 days left. 2 days left of work!

7) Yours Truly

Joseph took the camera for a spin the other day. He took a picture of me. My wife never takes pictures of me. Thanks Joseph. Don't I look great! Check out those pipes! Ready to hold a new baby.

Life is too short to not hold a new baby. It doesn't last long.

Points to Ponder: Updates and Such

8 March 2016

More ramblings. An update. A rant. And a picture of the boys.

1) The Good Ole Hockey Game

Saturday night my dad, brother and I drove to Prince Albert to watch my cousin Cory play. He's an overage forward for the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the WHL. He's actually been doing very well this year. We watched him score his 31st goal of the season. The game was good, though Lethbridge lost 3-2. In fairness to them, they were on the road all week due to their schedule.

Cory going for a skate.

My nephew Andrew was there (as was my niece Marie in the background).

Number 10

2) What are the odds?

A few years ago I went with my dad to Prince Albert to watch Cory play. My dad bought one 50/50 ticket that night and, of course, won it all. This past weekend he won it again there. I'm no mathematician, but I'm pretty sure the odds of that are one in a bazillion.

3) Sold Sold Sold!

Your chance of a lifetime is gone. You can't be our new neighbours. Ever. Our neighbours sold their house, after just over a week on the market. It was such a bargain. I mean, you could have purchased it, slapped some paint on the walls in the basement, and then sold it again for an easy $5-10 grand profit (on top of realty fees). Well, if a person had $175,000 of free spending money kicking around. That's always the catch. I'm sure if I had a million bucks I could think of easy ways to make 5-10 grand here and there. But I don't. I just have a wife who looks like a million bucks (that's for you dear... awww).

4) Lent Goes On

Every year lent offers new struggles. These struggles are either personal, or universal. One must always realize that the devil tries extra hard to complicate life (i.e. mess it all up) during the preparation for Easter. I hope we all realize this. Are there some things bugging you? Dragging you down? Not sitting right with you? Be aware that the devil is prowling. Especially if you are trying to be faithful to the spirit of your lenten practices.

Universally there hasn't been too much to speak of, yet. Yes there's the usual messed up world. Nuns murdered. Trump, Clinton, Obama, and Trudeau offering their daily words of un-Christian wisdom. Euthanasia lurking (that is a big deal). Yet there haven't been any DaVinci Codes, or secret Jesus tombs, revealed thus far.

Sadly I can't shake the feeling that something will happen yet. Ok, I'm being too vague. I'm more than a little cautious (read: worried) about Pope Francis' report on the synod which may be released later this month. The speculation being on St. Joseph's feast day (March 19th). I just fear that it will be more of the same. Some awesome things said. Some vague things said. And then the two or three confusing statements that blow up the Catholic world, gets misreported by the media, and tear the Catholic blogosphere apart. I know I shouldn't being thinking something like this will happen. I'm just really sick of those situations, and simply fear, perhaps rightfully, it will happen again. All just before Easter. However, how such a scenario affects me (or us) again can be manipulated by the devil (him again). More fasting and praying are needed.

5) Experience

"The baby's not moving much... I rubbed something on my back. The package didn't say a pregnant lady couldn't. That was yesterday. Now I don't feel the baby much..." Yes, that is Becca. I can't relate. I've never had a baby in my belly. It's the Church's fault you know. Old fashioned institution that won't allow men the equal rights of women, and so I can never become a mother, unless perhaps I leave the Church and start my own. Where was I? Oh yes, our baby. He, or she, kicks and bops a lot. Then he, or she, stops. Becca gives me updates quite frequently. Perhaps with a tinge of worry each time. Thankfully I remember that this was the same with John Paul. Some days he was busy in the belly, some days he wasn't. Parenting, in a sense, is easier with each child. Provided you remember past experiences.

For the record, the baby was bopping, last I heard.

Also for the record, I have no desire to ever be a mother.

6) School

In case you were wondering, things are good at the school. I'm finished floor hockey now. Though I am debating starting a quick league for the grade 3ers. Archery is in full training for the provincial team. At this point practices are very boring. Kids shoot. Us coaches offer tips. The good kids use the tips and improve. The clueless kids don't, and never improve. And the practices drag on. Well I had enough last time. Instead of coaching I went another route. I joined them in the shooting. This perked the boys' attention there. Suddenly the competition was on. They just had to try and beat me. So on we went counting up our scores each shooting frame. There's no better motivation for a boy than a little competition. And who knows? Maybe I'll get better too. There's no better motivation than to avoid losing to students.

Oh yeah, and I teach too. But nobody cares to hear about that.

7) The Boys

These boys are quickly becoming inseparable buddies. They do everything together. For instance, Joseph has a lenten calendar that he colours every day. John Paul wanted one too. So Joseph created one for John Paul, and now they both check off the days. They do workouts together, read books together, do "priest-school" work at the kitchen table... Why, even today, since I got home from work, they've been fighting non-stop. How chummy.

Here they are giving their mommy and daddy a break from dishes one evening:

By break I mean we had to wait 15 minutes for them to "help" before cleaning up their mess and then doing the dishes ourselves. But it's the thought that counts. I'm not going to say no to them.

I'm not their mother, after all.

Try Your Best

17 February 2015

Joseph is hockey CrAzY! He got his first hockey stick when he was not quite 4 months old. And he's been playing mini-sticks almost as long. But this year, wow!

Dan already told you all about his new obsession with "Try your best" and the Montreal Canadiens. It hasn't abated, just grown in intensity. Now he's in training so he can be a Montreal Canadien and win the Stanley Cup!

We've been skating at Grandpa's rink in Nipawin about 4 or 5 times this winter. Initially, Joseph was frustrated with his lack of progress and, wanting to just play hockey, resorted to his boots after some tough skating. But then something clicked. Now, he is skating the length of the rink, picking himself up when he falls, and loving every moment of ice time.

Learning Hockey with S'pee'd

26 January 2015

If we treated our kids like we did this blog then I'm sure social services would be all over us for such neglect. Though I swear our blog is treated with neglect due to our time spent with our kids. Nevertheless, we haven't blogged in a while (especially Becca... she's the real problem here). It's late and I need to go to sleep. What to do?

I suppose there's always the safe option. Pick a theme with the boys. Update a few going-ons. Maybe add a cute saying or two. Then some pictures. And close with some pithy about the topic.
Alright then.

Topic: Hockey

Update: Joseph has really taken to skating.
Of course we all know how he fell in love with hockey while watching the world juniors this past Christmas holiday. It got to the point that I had to finally kick him out of the room during the final game because he just wouldn't shut up. "My helmet is black with a visor and those guys have a black helmet and a visor! Hey I have my hockey skates on too! I'm playing with those guys! We're listening to music while we play!" Meanwhile Canada just gave up three quick goals to Russia. Out you go Joseph!

However, we managed to make it out to Nipawin the past two weeks to give Joseph more skating time (and eat pie, of course). What started out as a barely-stand-on-his-skates has very quickly turned into a little boy skating all over the ice. He's just a natural athlete, that boy. I teach many many kids phys ed, but there are usually only two or three true athletes in each class. Joseph can do more than many of my older students. So naturally he has taken to skating, and hockey. And he's so proud of himself! But wait, that's for the cute saying department...

Cute Saying: At first Joseph would hit the puck and skate, but not really understand what was going on. Even when we play in our basement he doesn't get what we are doing with the stick and the puck. But ahaaa! On Sunday, after over an hour outside, something finally clicked inside his brain! "Sticks are for shooting, Mom!"
Yes they are Joseph, yes they are.

Cute Saying #2: Joseph was so proud of how fast he could skate. How proud? Well after we came in from a two hour session outside I sat him down on the toilet. Clearly he needed to pee real bad, and out it came in a hurry. He noticed too, and excitedly proclaimed: "I'm peeing real fast... just like I skate real fast!"

Pictures:

Poor John Paul has been dying to learn how to skate. I take him around the ice, but he's very desperate to skate on his own.

Closing PithyI know I know, I shouldn't live my life through my child's. I can't force Joseph, or John Paul, to make the NHL. Nor should I. I'm actually very pleased that Joseph loves all sports, each in their proper season. But especially hockey. There's just nothing like it. If he doesn't make the NHL (I suppose that's a possibility), great. If he does, that would be $weet. Nevertheless, may he grow up enjoying the game. May his shots be hard. May his dekes be beautiful. May his skating be fast...

...just like his peeing.
