Learning the refrain for "Chritus Vincit". Joseph's poetry was "The Duel".
Reading Saint Pius X: The Farm Boy Who Became Pope and The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking.
And a few fun picture books we've been discovering or re-reading:
Catechism
Faith and Life Series, grade 2 Jesus our Life
Saint Joseph First Communion Catechism
A Little Book About Confession for Children
Saints for Young Readers
We alternate between these four books, depending on the day/saint. We are currently working our way through A Little Book About Confession for Children, which is a fabulous Q&A book to prepare your child for First Confession. We hope Joseph will receive his sometime before or during Lent.
The kids dressed up for Halloween, but also changed (or modified) costumes for saints. They attended Mass on All Saints' Eve all dressed up and our priest was thrilled. We have Saint Philip Neri, Saint Hedwig, and Saint George.
Language Arts
Joseph has been reading lots of Magic Treehouse and I Survived books. Our library has a reading challenge going on this month with entries for every book. He's hoping his dozens of books will get him a winning draw.
Working through beginner grammar: nouns, action and linking verbs, basics of sentence and paragraph writing.
Spelling. Dictation. Sentence/paragraph writing. Copywork.
Math
Money. Time to 5 min. Addition/subtraction up to 14 (I think). Measurement. Carrying. Triple-digit addition/subtraction. Very basic multiplication. Fractions. Etc.
Social Studies
Studying Japan and Thailand. Still loving Around the World with Picture Books. Below are pictures of our (very UNglamorous) Chinese cuisine night (Chinese pancakes and ginger beef stir fry) and our Japanese cuisine night (sushi, meso soup, and Japanese dumplings). The kids all agreed that they did not like sushi, even just cucumber sushi, and wrote their dislike in their notebooks.
Science
Studying beginning astronomy definitions: astronaut, astronomy, navigation, position of planets, planet names, etc. Make balloon sized planets for size reference.
We did an experiment afternoon with friends making different kids of goop, but I don't have pictures to show for it. Maybe I was too busy cleaning up the crazy mess!
Science fair. Project on simple machines. Joseph had lots of fun with this.
Art
Part of our Thailand unit for Social Studies included the story The Lotus Seed about a Vietnamese woman forced to leave her homeland and move to the United States. She treasures a lotus seed (sacred to Vietnamese) and finds joy and love in her growing family years down the road. We drew lotus flowers and used water colours to paint.
