Wet, Wet, Wet

26 July 2019

Water and wet seem to be key components to our low-key summer holidays. If it's not raining outside, a daily occurrence for much of the month of July, we've been in and around water a lot of our days.

A new pool from Costco means surfing and body-boarding right in your own backyard. And water balloons from Costco meant a few water fights. Even the Nipawin parade - which we voted far superior to our own town parade with awesome floats and lots of horses - involved Joseph getting soaked with some water balloons thrown from the pool float - and trying to get the thrower back with another balloon!

The boys have been fishing at a couple locally stocked trout ponds on a few occasions, but so far haven't figured out how to outsmart the smart fish. Even though we haven't had any fresh fish for supper, Dan has been trying his luck at BBQ pizza. Mmmm! One day, we'll build a real pizza oven. We even hosted some relatives for pizza and decided it's a lot of work to do pizza for a crowd!

Joseph enjoyed a few days away from the rest of us, hanging out with cousins at Grandpa and Grandma's. From what we heard, it was a blast of busy activity, swimming, and late-night movie-watching. He just informed us casually that he hadn't showered or bathed for almost 3 weeks! But apparently it's ok because he was swimming a lot. We cleaned him up with a hair-cut and good scrubbing session.

Despite our best laid plans to get to the lake on a hot day between thunderstorm warnings, we have yet to make it. Heat warnings for pregnant women kept us home last week, so we did a backyard campfire and got wet in our own pool. Later in the day, when the thunderstorms delayed their arrival, we went swimming in town where brave Emilie took on the big water slide solo.

The boys finished a successful week of swimming lessons. With two-a-day lessons every morning, they came home totally beat and have been ready for bed early. John Paul was especially pushed - having lessons in the deeper section where he could only stand on tip-toe. He didn't give himself any rest either, but grew into a tree and chopped himself down between each of his one-on-one practices with his teacher.

We're slowly doing fun things on our summer bucket list, but have also been working on a few necessary home changes. With a new baby due in a matter of weeks (4!), we've been rearranging rooms and doing a little painting. Said new baby has also been weighing a little heavy on me and keeping us more local than usual. Emilie has been preparing for the arrival of our baby by taking out all the baby clothes and playing with them, plus practicing nursing, swaddling, and sleeping techniques on her doll and bear. Now we have only to await his or her arrival!

Mini Summer Vacation

11 July 2019

We kicked off a little summer vacation in the city with a Latin Mass, trip to the Museum of Natural Sciences at the U of S, and some McDonald's $1 cones. It turned out to be a HOT few days in Saskatoon (we always seem to pick the peak heat for visits), but we made the most of it.

Next up, bouncy castles at Crickle Creek. John Paul received money for a family trip to a bouncy castle park from the Ontario Grandparents and we finally got to follow up on it. Despite "feels like 30+ degree" temperatures, the kids had a complete blast with their cousins. We had to stop them for a few re-hydration and shade breaks, but otherwise they played hard all afternoon.

Vacation in the city means hotels with pools, slides, and fancy breakfasts. We checked out some new-to-us hotels and were not disappointed with the slides or pools. It was a great break each afternoon to cool off in the pool and then again tire the kids out just before bedtime.

A fun addition to our mini-vacation was attending the Latin Mass summer kids camp. We were amazed with the hard work put in by volunteer moms and Father Andrew to make it a great success. The theme was the Precious Blood of Jesus (July is dedicated to the Precious Blood) and the leaders went deep with the kids on learning genuflections, adoration, ejaculations, sin and forgiveness, and many other associated themes. Each day consisted of Low Mass, catechism with Father, snacks, games, crafts, hymns, soccer, and lunch. Father surprised the kids with a bouncy castle and great outdoor barbecue to cap off a fabulous two days! Our kids left singing "Jubilate Deo" in rounds and marveling at having attended Mass 5 days in a row.

We came home to a garden full of weeds. The above picture is after Dan and our little workers (with much reminding) cleared them all out. We're harvesting lettuce and spinach so far. Carrots are a little slow and spotty, but what can you do?

And... our new tent arrived in the mail! A Christmas present from my parents, this new addition looks like it will see us through many a fun and wild outdoorsy vacation. We went for high-quality "no frills" and are very impressed overall. Here's to more summer fun!

Chopped: Kids' Edition

5 July 2019

Chopped returns with a new show featuring the three cuties. The contestants being: Joseph, Emilie, and John Paul.

Cheesy story lines:

Joseph: "I want to do Chopped because it's fun and I like dessert."

John Paul: "I want to win!"

Emilie: "Food!"

As an added twist, the boys were allowed to pick a parent to act as a sous chef. Joseph picked dad, because "he's a good cook." John Paul chose mom, "because she's the best at baking and dad can't bake." Emilie, never one to be told what to do, picked no one.

Please open your baskets:

Bananas...

Rice Krispies...

Crunchy peanut butter...

And ice cream...

You have 20 minutes to prepare a dish using all four items. You will be judged on presentation, taste, and your use of the basket ingredients. And the time starts... NOW.

Joseph (and dad): "We're making fried bananas coated in peanut butter, sugar, cinnamon, and Rice Krispies. The bananas will be fried in coconut oil and placed on top of a scoop of freshly made mint ice cream."

John Paul (and mom): "We're making peanut butter Rice Kristpie balls coated in chocolate. There will be some banana ice cream to go with it. We're here to win!"

Emilie: "I put some candies on the ice cream."

Time's up in 5... 4... 3... 2.. 1... Step away from your plates!

 Emilie's:

Joseph's (and dad's):

John Paul's (and mom's):

After much tasting it was decided that Joseph's dessert had the best parts (fried bananas and mint ice cream), but John Paul's was the best unified dessert. Emilie's didn't use all of the basket ingredients, but it was sweet, super colourful and did I mention sweet? Now to see who was chopped...

In the end it was too close to declare a winner between the boys, and so Emilie's split the decision.

Emilie wins!
