Chopped: Kids' Edition

5 July 2019

Chopped returns with a new show featuring the three cuties. The contestants being: Joseph, Emilie, and John Paul.

Cheesy story lines:

Joseph: "I want to do Chopped because it's fun and I like dessert."

John Paul: "I want to win!"

Emilie: "Food!"

As an added twist, the boys were allowed to pick a parent to act as a sous chef. Joseph picked dad, because "he's a good cook." John Paul chose mom, "because she's the best at baking and dad can't bake." Emilie, never one to be told what to do, picked no one.

Please open your baskets:

Bananas...

Rice Krispies...

Crunchy peanut butter...

And ice cream...

You have 20 minutes to prepare a dish using all four items. You will be judged on presentation, taste, and your use of the basket ingredients. And the time starts... NOW.

Joseph (and dad): "We're making fried bananas coated in peanut butter, sugar, cinnamon, and Rice Krispies. The bananas will be fried in coconut oil and placed on top of a scoop of freshly made mint ice cream."

John Paul (and mom): "We're making peanut butter Rice Kristpie balls coated in chocolate. There will be some banana ice cream to go with it. We're here to win!"

Emilie: "I put some candies on the ice cream."

Time's up in 5... 4... 3... 2.. 1... Step away from your plates!

 Emilie's:

Joseph's (and dad's):

John Paul's (and mom's):

After much tasting it was decided that Joseph's dessert had the best parts (fried bananas and mint ice cream), but John Paul's was the best unified dessert. Emilie's didn't use all of the basket ingredients, but it was sweet, super colourful and did I mention sweet? Now to see who was chopped...

In the end it was too close to declare a winner between the boys, and so Emilie's split the decision.

Emilie wins!

Chopped: Family Edition

4 July 2019

Welcome to Chopped: Family Edition! The reality show where parent is pitted against parent in a culinary battle which is sure to conquer taste buds and divide family members. Each contestant will be given four mystery basket ingredients on which to build a supper dish for the entire family. The dishes will then be judged on presentation, taste, and overall use of the basket ingredients. First, let us meet the contestants for the mandatory cheesy storylines:

Rebecca "Mommy" Millette

"I'm doing Chopped today because I want to prove to my kids that I can be a great mom and do great things, even while having so many kids."

Dan "Daddu" Millette

"Today I'm doing Chopped to prove that I am the best at what I do. I'm super confident in my abilities, and can't wait to show the world that I belong as a top chef. Some might say I'm arrogant, but it's this confidence that fuels me to greatness. Watch out 'Mommy' because I'm coming to win."

Chopped has been split up into two nights. The first night is Mommy's turn.

Please open your mystery basket:

Perrier lemon water...

Broccoli slaw...

Breaded cheese sticks...
And lamb sausage.

You have 45 minutes (5pm) to prepare and plate supper for everyone. Your time starts... now!

"I'm going to make lamb noodle stir fry with Sprite mojito drinks. I've never made lamb before, so I don't know how to use it! Ugh! Winning today is very important to me to prove that I can be a mom of so many kids and still be good at things..."

5...4...3...2...1! Stop working!

The result:

The judges taste the food. Judge one takes out the noodles and only eats them.

Judge two goes for the noodles as well.

The last judge complains that the drink doesn't balance with the meal very well (he's a hard judge to please when it comes to food).

The next night is "Daddu's" turn. Open your basket:

Eggo waffles...

String cheese...

Pears...

And packaged crab...

You have 45 minutes. Your time starts... now!

"This basket is a challenge. I don't like packaged crab! And crab and cheese don't go well together. But I'm doing this to prove that I am the best at what I do. I'm here to win. I'm going to infuse bacon in the dish and make some bacon, cheese, and sprout sliders on waffle buns. I'm going to add some sautéed pears and onions to add balance. I'll then make a rice stir fry for a side dish using the crab, more bacon, and various veggies. I'm gonna win."

Done a few minutes early!

The result:

The final tasting:

Judge one: "I don't want the rice."

Judge two: I really like the sandwich!"

Judge three: "I like everything!"

The judges deliberate. Whose dish has been chopped?

And it's...

Judge one: Your food was very good, but it was too spicy for us.
And for this reason, you have been chopped!

The winner!

"Today I proved that I am the best at what I do. Look out Bobby Flay, I'm coming for you next!"

The End

Stay tuned for a bonus dessert round coming soon... featuring our judges!

We're all fed up, thank you very much

26 June 2016

Daddy is in charge of the house these days. My parents gave some much needed help last week, but now it is Daddy-time. I know what you are thinking: "Poor Becca and the boys... cereal for supper every night." For starters, cereal is an awesome supper. But more to the point, we do eat well when I cook. I mean, for instance, here is just a little something I slapped together at a moment's notice tonight. It is simple compared to what I usually do, of course, but I don't want to brag...

A little music to get us started.

Some fresh veggies. Mushrooms, green onions, broccoli, et al.

We have a stir fry. Herb and garlic seasoning was added for that extra punch.

Ready for the steaks. I threw some marinade on them this morning. A mix of soy sauce, worcestershire, herbs, steak seasoning, olive oil, and lemon juice.

When we have steaks we often skip the potatoes. A little sliced baguette bread with olive oil and garlic seasoning roasts nicely on the barbecue.

Long live the grill. Some Bullseye sauce was added.

Bring the food inside.

Slice up a nice medium rare. Joseph likes it like this. Becca prefers just a tad less blood.

Plate it. A flower or two from my students at school always adds to the meal.

Smiles all around

Some left over mashed potatoes for the boys as well. More steak for me.

A simple dessert of mint chocolate chip ice cream and a cookie.

You see! I take great care of Becca as she continues to recover!

Oh, and that's her giving Emilie her meal... during our wonderful supper. I tried.
